Yet another mention of the Hillman Imp on this site!! On a previous thread i mentioned a problem of locked on rear brakes . My brake system is a home brew dual master cylinder ..One cylinder going to the large 10.5" front discs, the other the X19 rear set up! Initally the rear was locked on partially..This i had nearly overcome, taking into account a number of faults on installation on my part. Having left the car for some time doing something else i have now found that the foot pedal is solid..Absolutly solid with no play at all. The front brakes do not apply at all so the problem must be to do with the master cylinders ,which are new !! The rears are locked on again! My thoughts are with the locking device which was to act as a stop the car rolling away when not applying the foot brake! Has anyone had any similar problems with the hydraulic lockling in-line device?

Well nice to hear from you Dave 2,
As it happens i went back to that part of my life the other day, and away from using the chainsaw....(cutting up fuel for the stove within the 80 acres of woodland that my workshop is situated) i found once again the brakes had locked up! Turning on the ignition activated the stoplight switch which suggest the master cylinders are under pressure from the pedal..Sure enough lifting the pedal back up put out the light. That said to me the connecting rod/s are not releasing.. Strangely after all this saga the brake pedal is an inch higher than the clutch pedal! So i did some radical changes to the connection of the pedal to master cylinders...Like putting a 15mm spacer between the rear feed cylinders and a 10mm between the front feed on the home brew dual pedal box! Sounds easy ,but not so when you have to introduce longer bolts on the top side negotiate the output pipe and M/C body!! Well now the fault is it seems rectified with the brake pedal just right to enable heel and toeing, and best of all at least 6mm of free play at the pedal! The pedal there after is nice and firm! What it is like when the engine is running and the servo activated is yet to be found out... The rear brakes just merely bind now..Which i think will be sorted when the rear wheel turn a distance on the new brake pads. Those X19 pads are a funny shape! I wanted to use the type from my 850 Sport Coupe(same shape) which are flat ,but they are too fat to fit in the caliper! Well lets hope that the problem is now resolved . Ironicaly i have always had a problem getting HGH to stop under braking ,now it is actually getting it to go ! Next problem at the pedals is getting full throttle action ! From Karting experience i checked the pedal/throttle cable action and could see the butterfly flaps on the twin Webers were only 3/4 open..So for all that competiting over the years i never had full throttle..No wonder i didn't go faster than a certain Davrian!! Well thanks for the reply Dave 2 ,i'm getting rather lonely on this forum ..I'm begining to think i'm talking to myself !

Today i blocked up the rear wheels on stands and ran the engine in gear which has made a great improvement to the free running of the brakes! The offside is more tighter ,but i think the LSD is getting confused in not letting that side go(?)! As the car was later put back on the ground and as i knew i had more than 3" off steering movement due to front wheel arch modifications... Could i resist not having a little drive down our farm track! Getting the hang of a straight cut gear and all the noise enhanced me to have a wheely on the ice..Although the LSD gave an impressive bit of traction ..Before i knew what was happening i was up into 2nd with a crunch....Try the brakes....Well at least i know it seems as if the front locks up first! That little drive gave me such a high and to think HGH is nearly 3/4 finished ,it is spurring me on to the test day at Curborough, with instead of 100bhpish i might have 140 bhpish ...Cooorrr!! Well now what i need is to take it down to the MOT station for a brake balance test, although i have decided i cannot be bothered with having it road legal now(Handbrake hassle) ,just shove it in the Modified Imp class with the H.S.A! That means i have to use releatively low speeds to test in all aspects! Anyhow from experience driving the vehicle on the road and latter in competition is so far apart! Taking it back in the garage and using a scissor jack between seat and footbrake pedal i have a rough guess all wheels are the same at locking up now...So much for my brake bias ideas!!! Thinking about it though the engine wasn't running,so the servo wasn't activating the front brakes Still thats what the open/test day will be handy for...Next on the expensive list is a transporter! Nearly forgot..The rear brake locking thingy is working fine now..Dead handy for the Prescott paddock ..ay Eric!!

Hi David
Can you explain how your 'rear brake locking thingy' works please? I'm trying to get my head round it...

No...No! You don't use your head it is hand operated ! If you can imagine when depressing the footbrake and you suddenly smashed the brake line Front or Rear flat with a hammer say..The hydraulic fluid would stay compressed against the point of moveable operation(?) ie a wheel cylinder! Only this aparatus is more sophisticated in that it has shut off valve when you pull a lever up! Simply depress the foot pedal as hard as you want the car to remain still..Like how much an incline has to be delt with! Pull up the lever ..Then you can remove your foot from the pedal and wander off and hear what the Clerk of Course has to say,as in Eric M's case . Not needing me to sit in his Clan(not a bad moment mind)with my foot on the footbrake! In my case it will be handy to go off in a rush if i'm parked up on the dummy grid and need to have a wee wee! Well i am a lot over 40 you know!! Ideal for a proper racing car that isn't roadgoing as the device acts as a paddock parking brake in other words! Unfortunaly it isn't a substitute for a mechanical parking or braking device as i have found! I wish now that i had kept the mechanical parking brake on HGH(a la Pete richards modification-uses X19 rear discs/calipers) as it would then be road legal once it had passed it's MOT..As things stand it will not with this locking device as a parking brake! Still onwards and upwards...Positive thinking and all that..Can take the cars eyes out now amongst other things and save weight! Come to think of it i cannot get the car down the access drive from the farm as the owner has speed bumps in place ,so it will need a trailer/transporter to escape the vicinity anyway! I have your email addy so i will send you a picture or you can see the device in the mail order brochures! Off topic now! Thanks to you i am still on a high over this C-Nathan lark. I have now been contacted by a Gregor whose Sister happens tp have a TVR Tina...How interesting is that!!! There is a lot more things going on in his Historic career too! It gets better and better ;D David L

Forgot to mention i posted a photo on the Costin Forum of HGH as is now or as is from 22/12/09,prior to testing the brakes! I have difficulty getting images on hear as it clears the whole post when i press the image button( )! It's sitting there warming up in minus 3 degrees C...Still running on twin Webers mind. The Supercharger is actively connected ,but the connection has to be made to induction and ignition wise The location is so secret ..Amonst other thing that is my allotment in the background(my first ever),and i don't want anyone nicking my Broad Beans.. I've enough trouble with Deer,Rabbits,Badgers and everything else bright and beautiful not to contend with humans! Well thats my Xmas eve buzz over with...Roll on March 2010

Whoo get you Mr 4 star! What does it say for 5?!?
I've of course heard of a TVR Tina but never seen one - I presume it looks like the Grantura etc - classic TVR coupe shape of the '60s?
You'll find the Costin forum's bright lights are the chinese takeaway and the pelican crossing, but everyone seems to be most helpful and a mine of knowledge. Am still hoping to get my mitts on one...
On the subject of parking brakes, my simple suggestions are wheel chocks, leaving it in first...or perhaps a catheter and catch tank?!?
Wishing all and sundry have had a Merry Crimbo and a great New Year building/finding (that'll be me then) their race chariots.

Have just seen pics of the TVR on Gregor Marshall's website. Coupe looks pretty. However, as the total number built can be counted on the fingers of one hand I doubt we'll see one racing...
