Hi all,
The big problem with any motorsport is that the number of those intiially interested always outstrips those who will eventually make it to the grid (often by a long way). As such I've come up with an idea whereby I change the 'membership types' of the HTS from the current system based on the 100mph thing (V for verfied, TP etc).
I want to replace this with a Race Readiness Rating, which will give a truer picture of the likelihood of us being able to produce a grid full of cars. My idea is that each member has an RRR based on how close they are to being able to actually compete:
1 - wants to be a member but no initial interest in competing 2 - owns a car which needs restoring, with a view to competing 3 - owns a car which is up and running, but needs further work modification to make it race-worthy 4 - owns a car which could be raced straight away but no experience or licence (or budget!) 5 - car as 4, but also has a race licence, possibly experience etc -i.e. fully 'race-ready'
Under this system Swifty and I would be category 2 (with a lot of work to do), IM might be a 3 or 4, or may declare himself to be in category 1 for the time being, people like Pete and Simon B would be category 5, Simon Hulse's G15 would be a category 3 etc etc
When our Clan and Dav are finished, Swifty and I would be category 4 - cars ready but no money left and still to do our ARDS test!
I think this could be useful in giving a really true idea of our likely success, although it might take a bit of fine-tuning.
What do you think?
Cheers
Gerry

I'm a 3. I was planning to get mine out on some sprints this year but that seems less and less likely. Too many organising committments means I lack the opportunity to work on it and while it goes it's not in a competable form at the moment. Nor is my trailer useable, not just because there's an Singer with its cylinder head parked in front of it blocking it in right now ... (and I will be honest and say I haven't even looked at what extra safety equipment the Davrian will need above what a modprod sprint car needs yet and there's the problem that the engine is 1040cc).
The 18 months to 2011 should be long enough to get the car ready and an ARDS test. If I can (a) lose some speed event clerking / secretarying committments (b) don't end up moving house, which would consume all my money.

I'm a 2 atm by that Classification System.
However I intend to have the car running by the end of this season - I'm just about to start building engines, so 2011 will not be a problem.
The G15 needs plumbing, wiring and painting.
I already hold a National A race licence.

I think it's a cracking idea, it would be good to know the progress of the competitors with their cars and also, perhaps, as a way of encouraging others through the build process, being able to gauge how well their own projects are coming on in comparison with others. From my own perspective, this is something that I have wanted to do for a long time and I am quite excited at the prospect of being amongst a group of like minded people, with the same ambition........ to go racing! I appreciate that it is going to be a long slog and I don't just mean the building of the cars, all the lobbying and "marketing" of the project by members like Gerry, will take up a lot of time, motivation and effort on their part. The very least the rest of us could do, is to make sure that we have our vehicles in a fit state as quickly as possible, so that when the necessary meetings and negotiations take place, we at least have more than an idea, we can have a whole grid, ready and waiting for the green light. With this in mind, would it be fair to have a timescale for race readiness? I know that money doesn't grow on trees and it can be a very expensive interest, but, if we are to make progress, our leading lights need more than just the mere "fancies" of a bunch of people, they need commitment. Would it be fair to say, that by August next year, cars should be ready and drivers, who need them, looking to take their ARDS tests in September? That would, I suppose, give about 6 months before the series got under way and some time for a couple of organised track days, so we can get to know each other. I know that the risk is that we could spend a lot of time and money on cars and there be no series to compete in, but, to be honest, from my point of view, I'm buliding a racing car, to use in "anger", one way or another, regardless.

yeah id say this is a good idea. but is it possible to also leave the speed likelyness things too? just gives an idea of what people think they are getting into? id class myself a 2 the mo as its getting there and the welding is nearly done. just bought another car to break for the harder to find parts, and in the process of buying another engine to build. it should be on the road and being tweaked by christmas time i would think..... all going well.

Fine idea Gerry. As you say put me down for a 5. Could also put my original race Clan as a 5 for my daughter although I'd have to replace the 1120 that's in there at the moment for testing purposes.

i'm at a 3 at the mo. The only problem I'm encountering at the moment is storage. I need to find somewhere to store my mini and that could mean using the money I want to prep it on storage. Its too tempting just to get rid of it at the moment.

Its too tempting just to get rid of it at the moment. Sam Just two weeks ago i had space in my SHED..Well there is still space for a Mini, but i will have to swap vehicles around! The owner of the country retreat is very security conscience so it would be awkward to have you work on the car,as i have sole access(?) It's a bit complicated, but in general we keep all public eyes away!! Suppose you don't live anywhere near Loughborough after proposing this do you! All the same ,cannot have anyone dropping out! Send me a message for further details!

Hi all,
I've updated the categories slightly as I wasn't completely happy with them, and updated the membership page with all our RRRs - I've guessed many of them so let me know if I have you correctly on the new scale.
The main thing is to get as many 5s as possible - Pete, do I interpret you right that your daughter should also be on the list as a potential racer?
Cheers
Gerry

Gerry,
Yes Kate should be on the list as I've told her she's racing either my old car or her own.

And that makes the 40 up on the board! Plus Vince Frost added to make 41. And two more RRR5 rated drivers!
