I'm sure a lot of competitors have experience of installing the Fiat X19 rear brake disc conversion( as it carries a handbrake attachment) to their competition cars.. I have just done it for the first time,and all has been honky dory until recently! The vehicle in question is an Imp with conventional rear trailing arms. From the start i used one of my own dual master cylinder pedal boxes(well the first one ever actually) and plumbed the rear feeding Master Cylinder into the standard drums..As i knew i was going to install a rear disc set up and was unsure if the Fiat mechanism was to be fair dinkom ,i removed the Imp mechanical parking/hand brake cables and all. Then using one of those inline lock out or in levers on the now installed inside the cockpit front to rear brake line,i found it to be a success in locking the rear brakes...I'm under the impression it is legal for the MOT test...HGH will still be a road going class car! When the rear disc assembly was installed i had to take the self adjusting handbrake apart to get the disc pads(thin as standard)in between the caliper. It's a funny screw type thing..In doing so i replaced the lever and all the gubbins with a locked in secure bar! I don't need the mechanism see! After a fashion i have plumbed in the system from the rear flexible pipe backwards and it worked ,but i had a bit of long pedal travel.. Lifting up the hydraulic parking brake lever the pedal goes solid.. Aha ..i have air in the rear section! This cured i found the pedal hard but not really applying the rear brakes very well. I put a bit of bias on the rear master cylinder and it locks the rear discs but now will not release very well...I need a bar to lever the hub around! If i whack the caliper with a rubber mallet a couple of times in stratigic places all's well! Yesterday i wired up the rear lights and after getting my wires uncrossed the stop lights go on and off indicating the fault either lies with the new brake solid pipes i have fitted which lie on the trailing arm or the caliper needs freeing off -(cos the fluid is being forced to the rear to the stop light switch ok). The calipers have been purchased S/H from a reputable Fiat X19 concern ,and i trust them to have forwarded me good gear..They did clean and test the calipers before sending! Maybe the copper pipes have a restriction..Strange though as the pair are applying in the same strength. Maybe when the new pads are settled in they will throw back from the disc.. Anyhow anyone had similar problems..Or how have you delt with the mechanical handbrake mechanism on the Fiat X19 calipers... David L.
ps if i attempt to unscrew the caliper screw(Fiat handbrake adjuster ) anymore outwards it pees fluid out!

David,
I have X1/9 rear discs and calipers on my new Clan along with X1/9 front discs and calipers. I use a single 0.7 master cylinder and they work fine. I believe the Fiat master cylinder is a metric size very near of 0.7 inch
As regards the handbrake I have retained the mechanical assembly along with some shortened Imp cables. The only problem is that the cable need to pull from the rear of the caliper. I've overcome this very simply by using a short length of steel tube in a 'U' section which is fixed into the caliper braketry where the outer cable is normally fixed. I believe there may be a picture on the Imp forum but I'll take another this weekend and post on here.
By using both the front and rear X1/9 brakes I've ended up with a very nicely matched and balanced system without having to resort to the complications of a balanced system. Like my previous car this car will also be road legal.

Thanks for that..Although i still am suffering from binding rear brakes! Looks like i have stuffed myself for the MOT..Might as well go straight into Modsaloons or class P in HSA... Now what was that tyre configaration you once said..Slicks on rear and yoko somethings on the front(?)!

Pete Richards Well i might have found a loophole in this as i have just read through the www.motuk.com site and there is a section on hand operative lock mechanisms in replacement or in addition to the parking brake. Using a hydraulic parking brake is definetly out though as can be readin the MOT manual!

It looks as if i have managed to get over the problem of binding rear brakes! My first attack was to examine the rear calipers more closely . I could visualy see that the calipers were out of alignment hence one section of the pad was in constant contact with the disc! This sorted by shimming one side of the mounting hole to bracket i had calipers in line but still needing a large bar to turn the hub. I then checked the amount of adjustment to the rear brake master cylinder...Remember i have a home brew dual set up. The pedal by now is vitualy solid . Activating the rear line locking handle made it even more so! Releasing gave a motion of movement on the foot pedal,so at least i knew the rear locking valve is releasing (?). For my makeshift adjusting bar i used a Imp waterpump mounting bracket longish shanked bolt,to which i passed through the eyes of the master cylinder rods and pedal arm. Initialy i had little activation on the rear cylinder ,so i retrieved the standard M/C rod as opposed to the Imp one(The standard one has a threaded bar) .This then had a home brew eye screwed on ,and enabled me to adjust some more bias to rear! Didn't cotton on at the time ,but i could see now that the threaded rod was butting up against the horizontal bolt (dual connecting bar) . Hence the rear brakes were partially on!! Flicking on the ignition switch on confirmed this,as the stop light switch was permantly on!! Well all i had to do is remove a bit of thread/rod and it would clear the horizontal Dual/C y connecting bar/bolt. Easy said than done when you have a door bar in your chest whilst disasembling! That done the rear brakes are released!! Still a bit of bother though as when the locking handle is applied it doesn't properly relese the rear brakes..Undoing the bleed nipple then tightening does release though so maybe my suspect handbrake mechanisms on calipers is at fault still! Anyhow it appears as if i'm a bit more down the line with the brakes!! Maybe soon i will see if the actual 10.5 front disc + X19 rears give me my quest for 100% confidence braking confidence! In the meantime though ,my selection of 186/60 aspect ratio Falken Zies 912 road tyres + Discs on 7"x 13" Revolution wheels only give me 3" of steering movement !! Well this is the next problem. I need to remove the bottom hinge bracket plate from the front wheel arch as commonly done on circuit Special Saloon Imp racers to give clearance! Either that or use 175/ 60 tyres on the front as i had no problem before with Allan Millington front Fiesta discs(9")and the smaller section Fulda tyres. Still onwards & upwards ! 2011 is looming closer and closer!
